Pleomele Reflexa 'Song of India'

The Plant

Native to Mozambique, Mauritius and Madagascar – the Pleomele Reflexa (also known as the Pleomele ‘Song of India’) has risen in popularity to become one of the most widely adored indoor plants for homes and offices alike.

In its countries of origin, the Pleomele Reflexa is widely used in traditional medicine and is also critical to the diet of the Black and White Ruffled Lemur. It developed its nickname ‘Song of India’ because of its striking yellow and green appearance.

Its popularity is strongly linked to its low maintenance characteristics. In terms of light, it only requires about 200 foot candles of light for minimum maintenance and around 400 foot candles for good growth. To put this into perspective, full, direct summer sunlight is usually around 10,000 foot candles.

It is also incredibly drought resistant as it is used to the dry, arid conditions of its native desert habitat. Subsequently, it is a great plant to choose if you are prone to forgetting to water your plants. Interestingly, it was also one of the plants that have been approved as air-purifying by NASA. This means it is highly effective at removing common Volatile Organic Chemicals such as Benzene, Formaldehyde and Trichloroethylene.
