Introduction To Living Walls

A living wall is a green wall made up of live plants. To keep the plants in the wall alive they require frequent watering, sufficient light, and regular maintenance. We only supply a natural soil living wall system, which means the plants are being grown in their natural environment – allowing for healthy growth and development and maximising design flexibility. The system enables us to use a wide variety of plant species and be creative with different shapes, and patterns when we do the planting design. The living wall can be set up with established plants, making it look full right away. The natural soil substrate retains water well and encourages biodiversity. Even if the watering system stops working, the plants will still be okay because the soil protects their roots, making them last a short time without extra water

Origin

Our system is manufactured in the UK from 100% recycled material. Our plants are sourced from The Netherlands, and the UK

Key Benefits of Living Walls:

  1. Air Quality Improvement: Living walls filter pollutants and toxins from the air, creating a healthier indoor environment. This is particularly beneficial in urban areas where air quality can be a concern.
  2. Mental Health and Well-being: Exposure to greenery has been proven to reduce stress, enhance mood, and boost productivity. A living wall in the workplace can contribute to a happier and more engaged workforce. Read here on ‘What You’re Personality Says About The Spaces You Crave’
  3. Energy Efficiency: Living walls provide natural insulation, reducing the need for artificial heating and cooling. This can lead to significant cost savings on energy bills.

Sustainability:

Living walls can significantly enhance the sustainability of a building. Using natural soil as the substrate is highly efficient for moisture retention, which helps reduce water usage. Additionally, incorporating rainwater harvesting systems can further enhance sustainability by utilising rainwater for irrigation.

Irrigation:

A reliable irrigation system is essential for the success of a living wall. At Exubia, our irrigation systems are designed to keep plants adequately moist. For living walls larger than 30 square meters, a water tank is incorporated into the system. Smaller walls use a tankless system. Concealed irrigation pipes maintain the aesthetic appeal of the wall while ensuring optimal water distribution.

Lighting:

Proper lighting is crucial, especially in indoor environments with low natural light. We provide grow lighting solutions with a high Colour Rendering Index (CRI) to ensure plants receive the necessary light spectrum for optimal growth. Our design team can offer advice on the best lighting setup for your living wall.

Fire Safety:

Safety is paramount. Our living wall system has achieved the highest possible fire rating for living walls (Class B-s2-d0). This means our system is highly fire-resistant with minimal smoke production and no flaming droplets, ensuring safety and peace of mind.

Care & Maintenance:

Regular maintenance is vital for the longevity of a living wall. This includes:

  • Inspection for Pests and Diseases: Regular checks by qualified horticultural technicians to identify and treat any issues.
  • Irrigation System Checks: Ensuring the automated irrigation system is functioning correctly and adjusting as needed.
  • Plant Trimming and Replacement: Keeping plants healthy and replacing any that fail or outgrow their space.
  • Fertilisation: Periodically applying fertiliser to strengthen plant roots.

Our maintenance packages are designed to keep your living wall thriving, preventing plant loss and ensuring long-term sustainability.

Conclusion:

Living walls are a powerful way to enhance any commercial space, offering numerous benefits that go beyond aesthetics. At Exubia, our expertise in design, installation, and maintenance ensures that your living wall is not only beautiful but also sustainable and easy to care for.
